ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON UPDATE C09-27766
On Monday, February 9, 2009, a 19 year old male was seriously assaulted by a group of individuals in a parking lot in the 600 block of Sara Avenue.
The victim was conveyed to hospital in critical condition and continues to receive medical treatment for injuries sustained as a result of the assault.
As a result of the investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, five suspects were arrested in early May 2009 in connection with the assault.
On December 28th, 18 year old Everett Junior LAQUETTE and 20 year old David Lee BALLANTYNE were arrested by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Both were charged with Aggravated Assault in connection with the incident and detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
No further arrests are pending.
STRONG ARM ROBBERY C10-2837
On January 4th, 2010 at approximately 11:00 p.m., a 56 year old female was walking in the area of the 400 block of Edmonton Street when she was approached from behind by two unknown males.
The victim was physically assaulted, causing her to fall to the ground. The suspects continued to assault the victim to her upper body while she remained on the ground.
During the incident, the victim called out for help at which time the suspects fled the area with the victim’s property.
The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident.
The suspects are described as: Males, Aboriginal in appearance, thin build, 5’5” in height, wearing: dark clothing.
The investigating is continuing by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit.

Kick-off for WPS Half Marathon & 2 Person Relay

Winnipeg Police Service 6th Annual Cops for Cancer Half Marathon

On May 2, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. the Winnipeg Police Service will be hosting its 6th Annual Half Marathon in support of the Cops for Cancer program. The run is being hosted by the Winnipeg Police Service, the Winnipeg Iron-Cops, and The Running Room.

The event starts and finishes inside the Assiniboine Park near the foot bridge. The course will remain the same as last years which can also be accessed by going to www.wpshalfmarathon.ca.

The course will remain open for four hours to allow runners, wheelchair athletes and walkers to participate. Participants are welcome to register in person at any Running Room location, at the Cancer Society Office at 193 Sherbrook Street, on-line on the Running Room website or through the event website at www.wpshalfmarathon.ca.

Early registration is recommended as a maximum of 1550 runners and 325 Two Person relay teams are being accepted. An early bird registration fee of $65.00 is being offered for single runners and $130.00 for the Two Person relay teams until January 31st, 2010.

All participants will receive a complimentary souvenir T-Shirt with their registration, refreshments throughout the course, a pancake breakfast, entertainment after the race, and a surprise finisher’s gift!

The top three male and female finishers will be announced and presented with a cash purse prize as follows:

1. First place male and female - $1,000.00 each
2. Second place male and female - $500.00 each
3. Third place male and female - $250.00 each

All net proceeds raised will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society and remains in this Province.

UTTER THREATS AND INTIMIDATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL ARREST R09-97412
During the early evening hours of Thursday December 17th 2009, a 24 year old male was allegedly operating a speeding vehicle eastbound on Hamilton Avenue, near Knox Street.

The alleged offence was captured by a photo radar unit which was manned by a photo radar operator.

The suspect attended to the photo radar unit and is alleged to have uttered threats to kill the Peace Officer, while aggressively attempting to gain entry into the photo radar unit.

During the incident the suspect attempted to tamper with the radar equipment in addition to pounding his fists on the windows and kicking at the doors of the vehicle.

The peace officer was not injured in the incident.

A subsequent investigation by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Central Traffic Unit has resulted in the arrest of a 24 year old male. He is facing charges of Uttering Threats to Kill and Intimidation of a Justice Official.

The suspect has been released on a Promise to Appear.


FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C10-2362
On January 4th, 2010 at approximately 10:50 a.m., Uniform members were dispatched to the area of Waverley Street and Victor Lewis Drive regarding a serious motor vehicle collision.

The investigation has revealed that a vehicle being operated by an 83 year old male, including a 73 year old female passenger was travelling northbound on Waverley Street approaching Victor Lewis Drive. The driver of the vehicle began to negotiate a left hand turn onto Victor Lewis Drive at the same time a tractor trailer was travelling southbound on Waverley Street.

The vehicle proceeded to turn onto Victor Lewis Drive directly into the path of the tractor trailer at which time the vehicle was broadsided on the passenger side.

As a result of the collision, a 73 year old female succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision.

The 83 year old driver of the vehicle was conveyed to hospital in critical condition where he remains at this time.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a 49 year old male was not injured during the incident.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.

MISSING PERSON – Linnea DANIELS – R10-105
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 17 year old missing female, Linnea DANIELS. DANIELS was last seen on December 31st, 2009 in the north end area of Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Police Service considers DANIELS to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being exploited or victimized and investigators are concerned for her well-being.

DANIELS is described as: Aboriginal, 5’3” tall, weighing approximately 100 pounds and has long straight dark hair, with brown eyes.

DANIELS is known to frequent the Downtown area of the city.

Anyone with information regarding DANIELS’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.


GROW OPERATION ARREST C10-2618
On January 4th, 2010 at approximately 5:00 p.m., members of the District 3 Community Support Unit, with the assistance of the Green Team and Tactical Support Team executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence in the 400 block of Pritchard Avenue.

As a result of the search, the following items were located and seized:

Approximately 526 plants - estimated street value of $589,120.00
Approximately 2298 grams (6 ½ pounds) marihuana – estimated street value of $22,980.00
Approximately $15,000.00 worth of grow operation equipment
$495.00 cash
At the time the warrant was being executed, a 37 year old male was located within the residence.

He is facing the following charges: Produce Controlled Substance namely; Marihuana, Possession of Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possess Proceeds of Crime Under $5000.00.

He was released on a Promise to Appear.

TWO MALES ARRESTED FOR NUMEROUS OFFENCES
In the early morning hours of December 28, 2009, a pick up truck was stolen from a residence in the 1400 block of St. Matthews Avenue.
On December 29, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Uniform members observed the stolen truck being operated in a parking lot in the 2300 block of McPhillips Street. As police began to follow the vehicle, the driver turned the vehicle around, accelerated and collided with the police vehicle, then fled the area. The two officers required medical attention for injuries sustained in the collision.
Between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., a car was stolen from a parking lot in the 1500 block of Portage Avenue.
At 10:00 p.m., occupant(s) of the stolen car attended a gas station in the 1800 block of Main Street and fled without making any attempt to pay for a quantity of gasoline received.
At 10:55 p.m., merchandise was stolen from a beer vendor in the 1700 block of Portage Avenue by persons who made no attempt to pay for the merchandise and fled the store.
On December 30 at 12:40 a.m., the stolen car was observed by police in the area of Higgins Avenue and Main Street. While a number of Uniform members were assisting in attempting to stop the stolen vehicle in the area of Machray Street and Salter Avenue, the vehicle was driven directly at a police vehicle and striking it. Officers were not injured as a result of the collision.
The suspect continued to flee in the car and a pursuit ensued resulting in the suspect driving at excessive speeds, disregarding a traffic control device and travelling the wrong direction on McPhillips Street. The pursuit was ceased by police due to public safety concerns.
At 3:30 a.m., a 19 year old male became involved in verbal dispute with an unknown male while standing near his vehicle in the 1500 block of Alexander Avenue. In order to prevent the incident from escalating, the male fled the area. The second male then drove away in the 19 year old’s car, striking an acquaintance of the victim as he fled. Neither of the victims requires medical attention.
On January 1st, 2010 at 4:00 a.m., police located a stolen mini-van that was parked in a parking lot in the 2100 block of Pembina Highway. The two occupants of the vehicle fled from the vehicle resulting in one of the males being apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.
The second male was located a short distance away with the assistance of the Canine Unit.
James Kelly POOLE, 21 years of Winnipeg was charged with the following in connection with the incidents:
- Robbery
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime X 2
- Possessing a Controlled Drug or Substance
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon
- Theft Over $5,000.00
- Theft Under $5,000.00 X 2
- Fail to Comply with the Conditions of a Recognizance X4
An 18 year old male of Winnipeg was also charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Possession of Break-In Instruments and Failure to Comply with a Sentence in connection with the incidents.
Both were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.


Winnipeg Police Emergency Services are currently on scene at Victor Lewis Drive and Waverley Street for a serious motor vehicle collision. South bound Waverley Street is closed at Wilkes. The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting motorists avoid the area until further notice.

STABBING UPDATE C10-480
On January 1, 2010 police released information regarding a stabbing that occurred at approximately 8:55 a.m. in the area of Grosvenor Avenue and Lilac Street resulting in one male sustaining life threatening injuries.
The investigation revealed that two males who are known to each other became involved in a verbal dispute via text messages in the early morning hours of January 1st.
One of the males attended the second male’s residence in the 800 block of Grosvenor Avenue with two other males and a female and a physical altercation ensued. The males proceeded to physically assault the 25 year old resulting in his sustaining a number of serious but non life-threatening injuries, including a stab wound to his midsection.
During the altercation, two of the three attending males sustained stab wounds. One of the males, aged 28, was treated for life threatening injuries. He has since been upgraded to critical but stable condition. The second male, aged 27, was treated for non life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured during the altercation.
Three persons were arrested later in the day by Division 16 detectives in connection with the incident.
Robert GILCHRIST, 27 years, of Winnipeg was charged with Aggravated Assault and Assault with a Weapon and detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
A 27 year old male is facing charges of Aggravated Assault and Assault with a Weapon and was released on a Promise to Appear.
A 25 year old female is facing charges of Aggravated Assault and was also released on a Promise to Appear.
The investigation is continuing.
STABBING C10-432
On January 1, 2010 at approximately 3:00 a.m., two males became involved in a verbal dispute at a social gathering at a residence in the first 100 block of Charles Walk.
The dispute escalated to the point where one of the males was stabbed in the upper body by the second male. The 25 year old victim was conveyed to hospital in unstable condition with serious injuries. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.
The investigation by the Major Crimes Unit resulted in the arrest of Jacob YELLOWBACK, 18 years, of Winnipeg in connection with the incident. He was charged with Aggravated Assault and Fail to Comply with the Conditions of a Recognizance and detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

STOLEN VEHICLE ARRESTS C10-995
On January 1, 2010 at approximately 10:30 p.m., a PT Cruiser was stolen from a parking lot in the 3700 block of Portage Avenue.
On January 2nd, at approximately 2:00 a.m., the stolen vehicle was observed by Uniform members in the area of Portage Avenue and David Road. The driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to evade police by fleeing resulting in two parked vehicles being struck on Stewart Street a short time later. All three vehicles sustained substantial damage as a result of the collisions.
Two suspects aged 14 and 18, were arrested at the scene. The 14 year old male was charged with Occupant of a Motor Vehicle Without Consent and Fail to Comply with the Conditions of an Undertaking X 2 and remains in custody at this time.
The 18 year old male was conveyed to hospital in unstable condition with numerous injuries and has since been upgraded to stable condition. He is facing charges of Occupant of a Motor Vehicle Without Consent and remains in hospital at this time.
A third male aged 19, fled on foot and was arrested a short time later at a residence on Stradford Street with the assistance of the Canine Unit. He is facing charges of Theft Over $5,000.00 and Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident and Exchange Particulars under the Highway Traffic Act. He was released on a Promise to Appear.
The investigation is continuing.

ASSAULT ARREST C10-59
On January 1, 2010 at approximately 12:45 a.m., a male was confronted and physically assaulted with a weapon by another male in a bar in the 400 block of McMillan Avenue.
The 26 year old victim sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries to his upper body as a result of the assault.
A 28 year old female also sustained non life-threatening injuries during the assault.
The suspect fled the bar but was apprehended a short distance away by Uniform members investigating the incident.
Kevin Todd COOPER, 22 years of Winnipeg, was charged with Aggravated Assault and Assault with a Weapon in connection with the incident. He was detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

January 1, 2010

VEHICLE THEFT ARREST C10-245
Sometime after 3:00 a.m. on January 1, 2010, a male attended to his running vehicle in the rear lane of a residence in the 700 block of Arlington Street and located two unknown persons within the vehicle.
The suspect male in the driver’s seat struck a parked vehicle as he attempted to drive away. The vehicle owner confronted the suspect and a physical altercation ensued. The victim was physically assaulted by the suspect during the altercation but did not require medical attention.
The suspect fled but was apprehended by the victim and an acquaintance in the area of Home Street and Wellington Avenue where they held him until police arrived a short time later.
Derek John HALL, 22 years of Winnipeg, was charged with Assault, Theft Over $5,000.00, Impaired Driving, Failure to Provide a Breath Sample and two Court Order breaches. He was detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
The investigation is continuing.
STABBING C10-480
On January 1, 2010 at approximately 8:55 a.m., police were called to the area of Grosvenor Avnue and Lilac Street regarding a male that had been stabbed.
An adult male was conveyed to hospital with life threatening injuries to his upper body and remains in critical condition at this time.
A second adult male was stabbed in the mid-section of his body and is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
A third involved male was physically assaulted and is also being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be investigated and no additional information is available at this time.
